The recent censorship in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake stems from the need to comply with age rating regulations, as revealed by Yuji Horii, the legendary creator of the series. In a recent interview, Horii discussed how the remake differs from the 1988 original, including these censorship-related changes.

Originally announced in May 2021, the remake was completed in mid-September 2024 and is set to release on November 14 for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. Leading up to its release, some fans expressed concerns about changes made by the Japanese developer Ardink, particularly to the female character models of the Warrior and Gadabout classes, which now reveal less skin.

Horii addressed these concerns during Tokyo Game Show 2024, explaining that "various regulations" necessitated these alterations. He noted that the game's age rating would have been higher if the original designs by Akira Toriyama, the late artist, had been kept. Despite personally having no issue with the original 1988 sprites, Horii acknowledged the importance of adhering to modern rating standards. This insight was shared through a translation by Twitter user Saou0345.

The game has been rated "Everyone 10+" by the ESRB, while its PEGI rating is expected to be PEGI 12, which is the European equivalent of the ESRB rating. Horii also touched on other changes in the remake, such as replacing the "male" and "female" hero options with "Type 1" and "Type 2," a modification he questioned, asking rhetorically, "I really wonder who's even complaining about this?"

Former Shonen Jump editor Kazuhiko Torishima, who played a significant role in launching the original Dragon Quest, also participated in the interview. After the censorship topic was raised, Torishima criticized the United States, calling its content rating system "narrow-minded" and "ridiculous."

Despite the censorship controversy, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake promises various enhancements, including graphics similar to Octopath Traveler, quest markers, difficulty modes, and a new Monster Wrangler vocation. Players can also expect modernized animations and visual cues that reflect enemy HP loss during battles.
