You are recharging your UPPCL smart prepaid meter, but your old electricity dues are not clearing — or only a small part is getting deducted. This happens because there are two different payment buttons on the UPPCL app and website, and most people press the wrong one. This guide shows exactly which button you should use to clear your full old postpaid dues.
Why is my old UPPCL electricity due not clearing after recharge?
When UPPCL shifted smart meters from postpaid (bill later) to prepaid (pay first), many consumers already had unpaid bills. This pending amount is called postpaid arrear — simply, money you owed before the meter became prepaid.
Now here is the important part: When you do a normal recharge, your full arrear is not cleared at once.
UPPCL has fixed a rule for recovery of this old amount. Only a small percentage of every recharge is used to reduce your arrear.
As per UPPCL Letter No. 27 dated 16 January 2026 (LMV-1 domestic consumers)
| Old Total Dues | Deduction from Each Recharge |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹10,000 | 10% of recharge |
| ₹10,001 – ₹15,000 | 15% of recharge |
| ₹15,001 – ₹20,000 | 20% of recharge |
| Above ₹20,000 | 25% of recharge |
👉 For all other categories (commercial, industrial, etc.), 25% of every recharge goes toward old dues.
So where does the remaining money go? It is added to your prepaid meter balance and used for your daily electricity consumption.
I have explained the full deduction logic and low balance issue here:
But UPPCL's own rule also says: If you want to pay your full old dues in one shot, you can do that too. There is a separate button for this — and most consumers never notice it.
There are two payment buttons — understand the difference
On both the UPPCL website and mobile app, you will see two similar-looking buttons. But they work very differently:
1. Recharge
- Used to add balance to your meter
- Only 10%–25% goes toward old dues
- Remaining amount is used for electricity consumption
2. Pay Old Postpaid Arrear / Pay Arrears
- Used to clear old dues
- 100% of payment goes to arrear
- Meter balance does not increase
👉 This is the main mistake — people keep using “Recharge” and expect full arrear to clear.
Now here is the visual showing the two buttons on the UPPCL website, and what each one does.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: I recharged ₹2,000 but my old dues hardly reduced. Why?
Because you used the normal recharge option. If your dues are above ₹20,000, only 25% (₹500) went toward dues. The remaining ₹1,500 went to your meter balance. You should click another payment option which is "Pay Arrears" or "Pay old postpaid Arrear"
Q: If I use “Pay Old Postpaid Arrear”, will my meter balance increase?
No. That payment is only for clearing dues. You need to recharge separately for meter balance. which is the first payment option - "Recharge" or "Proceed for prepaid recharge"
Q: Can I clear the full arrear in one payment?
Yes. UPPCL allows full payment of old dues. Use the dedicated “Pay Arrears” option and pay the total amount.
Q: My meter shows negative balance (like -36,792). Is this the same as arrear?
Not always. Negative balance means you have consumed more electricity than your prepaid recharge. Old arrears are shown separately as “Old Postpaid Arrear”.
